This project is a real tardis. Beyond the retained facade, we’re building an entirely new steel framed synagogue with extensive circa 5.5m deep split-level basement.
The site sits within the zone of influence of the proposed Crossrail 2 route, so we have a rigorous approvals process to complete. Working with a trusted Geotechnical engineering partner, we’ll be working to assess the ground movement and determining an appropriate structural form that suits the site constraints and client requirements. Then comes the real challenge of incorporating a substantial 13m x 14m double-height, column free, shul into what we hope will be a sustainability minded design. We have some tricks up our sleeve to achieve this, including a hidden vierendeel truss in the mezzanine balustrade.
